Everything you need to know about your car’s glass claim

by Courtney Wicksteed

Everything you need to know about submitting a car glass claim with Naked: what to expect, timelines, costs and how repairs work.

Submitting a glass claim is straightforward, but knowing what happens after you hit submit makes the whole process a lot less stressful. Here's a clear breakdown of what to expect – from submission to sorted.

What happens after you submit your claim?

Once you've submitted your claim through the Naked app, it's assigned to one of our claims agents. They'll review your loss description, check your damage photos and confirm that everything is in order. If anything is outstanding, we'll let you know exactly what we need via email and the To-dos tab in the app!

Repair or replacement: how do we decide?

Once your claims agent has reviewed your damage photos, they'll classify the work required. A small chip is typically repaired, while cracks spreading from the chip usually require a full replacement. You'll be notified once your glass has been checked out.

How long will it take?

Turnaround times depend on the type of damage:

  • Chip repairs are usually quick and can often be completed within 48 hours of your claim being approved.
  • Full glass replacements take a little longer. If your glass is readily available, it could be a few days. If it needs to be imported, it may take a few weeks. We'll keep you updated!

Either way, the supplier will come out to you at a time and place that suits you!

What will it cost me?

Your excess is based on the total cost of the repair or replacement. You'll never pay more than R1,000. And if your claim is R2,000 or less, you pay nothing.

A few examples to make this clearer:

  • Claim of R2,100 → you pay R100
  • Claim of R2,900 → you pay R900
  • Claim of R3,500 → you pay R1,000

What if I've already had my glass repaired?

We can still help, depending on whether you had prior approval:

  • If you received prior approval, we'll cover the full cost less a maximum excess of R1,000.
  • If you didn't receive prior approval, we'll settle up to R1,500 (R2,000 cap less a R500 excess).

In both cases, we'll need proof of the damage and the completed repairs.

What if there's a smart display on my windscreen?

Some cars need calibration after a windscreen is fitted to make sure features like rain sensors and heads-up display are working properly. This also applies to smash-and-grab film. If your car needs calibration, they will let you know – it usually takes an extra day after fitment and is arranged directly with you.

Will replacing my windscreen affect my car's warranty?

No. Under South Africa's Right to Repair guidelines (in effect since July 2021), your manufacturer can't void your warranty just because your windscreen was replaced outside the dealership or with non-OEM glass. Our suppliers uses SABS-approved glass that meets manufacturer specs. Where your car needs ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) calibration, that's done as part of the fitment.

Can I claim for more than one panel?

Yes. If multiple glass panels were damaged in the same incident, you can submit a single claim covering all of them.

Is car hire available while my glass is being repaired?

Car hire is not applicable for glass claims.
