How much do I insure my contents for?
Start by doing a room-by-room inventory of your belongings, and estimate what it would cost to replace them new today. Don’t use the original purchase price. As a rule of thumb, estimate smaller items at 20–30% of the high-value items in the room. Then add a buffer (about R50,000) for new things you’ll likely buy during the year.
What qualifies as a home emergency?
Any situation that puts your stuff at risk, like a burst geyser flooding your lounge or a break-in. If something urgent happens, contact us through the app or call 0860 995 125. We’ll help you get it sorted ASAP.
Can I insure my stuff if I live with my parents?
Absolutely. If you’ve got furniture, electronics or other valuables in your room at home, you can take out home contents cover in your own name. For specific items like laptops or phones, our single item cover may be a better fit.
Can I get Naked cover if I rent out part of my home?
Yes, if it’s a long-term rental. But if you’re running an Airbnb or short-term letting, we unfortunately can’t offer cover at this stage.
I'm moving. How do I change my home address on my policy?
Reach out through the app or email us at help@naked.insure. We’ll help you update your address and check if your premium needs to change based on your new location.
Am I covered for accidental damage?
Yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Accidental damage is covered only for items you’ve specified under ‘Items over R5,000’. Everything else is covered for fire, theft, burst pipes and more, but not for accidental oopsies.
Is my stuff only covered at home?
Most of your contents are covered at home. If something is not specified, it’s only covered up to R5,000 per item when taken outside your home (with a total cap per event). Items you’ve specifically listed are covered wherever they go, even when you travel out of the country.
Are other people I live with covered under my policy?
Yes, if they’re your partner or immediate family living with you. Flatmates aren’t covered and need their own policy. Domestic workers are covered up to R10,000
Are my contents covered if the geyser bursts?
Yes. If a geyser leaks or bursts and your stuff is damaged, that’s covered. The geyser itself is a building issue, so your building insurance (or your landlord’s, if you’re renting) would handle that.
Here’s a handy blog on who is responsible for what when it comes to renting a place.
Am I covered while moving house?
Yes, but it depends on the item:
- Specified items are fully covered at their insured value during the move.
- Unspecified items are covered up to 20% of your total contents sum insured if they’re damaged in a fire, lightning strike, explosion or road accident involving the moving vehicle.
- Theft or attempted theft while in transit is not covered, even for specified items.
Who does personal liability cover under my home policy?
Your personal liability covers you, your partner, and your financially dependent family members who live with you.
What should I specify under items over R5,000?
Anything portable and valuable. Think jewellery, laptops, cameras, bikes — anything that would cost more than R5,000 to replace. If you don’t list it, it’s only covered for up to R5,000 and won’t be covered for accidental damage.
What does easily portable mean?
If you can carry it out the front door, it’s considered portable. This includes tech, jewellery, musical instruments, and sports equipment.
Do I need to send through invoices or valuation certificates when specifying portable items?
When buying cover, it’s a lot easier to upload receipts and invoices then and there because you might misplace them. If you need to claim, we usually ask for receipts or valuation certificates, especially for higher-value items.
Does Naked have any additional excesses?
Nope. The excess you pick is what you pay, no hidden surprises.
When do I have to pay my excess?
You pay your excess if you claim. It’s your contribution towards the cost of repair or replacement.
